HAYNES INTERNATIONAL MOTOR MUSEUM EXTENSION
New Extension to Award-winning Motor Museum

Sparkford | Somerset
Having previously designed an award-winning £6 million extension / refurbishment of their existing premises, Haynes International Motor Museum asked Boon Brown to design a linked two-storey extension with museum/exhibition space on the ground floor and office accommodation on the upper level, plus additional car parking spaces and landscaping works.
The new bespoke extension will be added as a continuation of the side elevation of the existing museum (locally referred to as the ‘Black Box’), keeping the buildings compact and avoiding development spread into the ‘greener’ parts of the site.
The new building is purposefully simple and modest in its design, sub-servient to the 2014 museum extension and reflecting the industrial design of its immediate surroundings.
The ground floor has an opaque glazing system that allows natural daylight into the museum exhibition space but restricts direct views from the outside. The first floor comprises conventional glazed windows to provide maximum levels of natural daylight into the proposed office space. Framing these large glazed areas, a cantilevered brise-soleil provides solar shading to the first floor as well as a visual ‘book end’ effect to the whole building.
