More than affordable housing
Mendip View was conceived as a response to some of the biggest challenges facing communities today: the need for affordable housing, rising energy costs and the climate crisis. Developed in partnership with Stonewater, the scheme delivers 20 high-quality homes that combine traditional rural character with pioneering low-carbon technology.
Designed to sit comfortably within the historic setting of Axbridge, the development demonstrates how affordable housing can provide long-term social, environmental and economic value for residents and communities alike.
Intelligent by design
From the outset, sustainability was embedded into every aspect of the project. Enhanced building fabric, increased insulation and a fully integrated smart home system work together to reduce energy demand and improve performance.
Each home uses Wondrwall’s AI-powered Home Energy Management System, which continuously monitors and optimises energy use, helping residents maximise efficiency while reducing overall consumption.
Delivering net zero living
The homes are entirely gas-free and combine solar photovoltaic panels, battery storage, electric vehicle charging and intelligent heating controls to create a highly efficient living environment.
Designed to generate and store renewable energy on-site, the development is expected to achieve net zero energy performance and net zero carbon emissions while significantly reducing household energy bills.
Tackling fuel poverty
At a time of increasing energy costs, affordability extends beyond rent or mortgage payments. Mendip View was designed to help residents maintain lower living costs throughout the lifetime of their homes.
Compared to the same houses with gas heating, every year the Mendip View development are set to achieve:
- over 110,000 KWH less energy consumption
- over 20,000 KG less CO2 emissions
- almost £23,000 less energy bills (based on an expected energy bill of £123 / month)
Building stronger communities
Alongside its environmental performance, the development was designed to foster community connections. A shared-surface streetscape encourages neighbourly interaction, while carefully considered architecture and public realm create a welcoming and distinctive place to live.
The inclusion of public art and investment in the wider environment further strengthens a sense of belonging, helping establish a resilient and connected community for the future
